PTEN gene
A gene that makes a protein involved in controlling many
cell functions, including cell division and cell death. The PTEN protein may
also be involved in cell movement, the attachment of cells to surrounding
tissues, and the formation of new blood vessels. Mutations (changes) in the
PTEN gene have been found in many types of cancer and in several disorders in
which people develop benign (not cancer) tumours. The PTEN gene is a type of
tumour suppressor gene1.
